Campaigns Director

Based in Augusta, ME

The Maine AFL-CIO seeks a dynamic and passionate Campaigns Director to coordinate political and legislative strategy, develop and implement strategic campaigns, coordinate our Contract with Maine’s Working Class project and support our legislative, political, educational and policy work. 

Overview of Responsibilities
The Campaigns Director seeks to build the collective power and improve the lives of working people by coordinating political and legislative strategy for the Maine AFL-CIO. The Director will develop strategic, high participation political and legislative campaigns; coordinate our Contract with Maine’s Working Class project; support the Maine AFL-CIO’s legislative, political and policy work; develop the leadership and deeply engage union members and working people in all aspects of the legislative and political process; support year-round policy development; and work with staff and members to run highly participatory issue and political campaigns.

Description of Duties

• Coordinates political and legislative strategy for the Maine AFL-CIO. This includes developing and running strategic, high participation legislative, political and educational campaigns that prioritize member involvement and leadership development. 
• Coordinates our Contract with Maine’s Working Class project. The Maine AFL-CIO is developing a pro-active, labor-led agenda to address the most important issues for Maine’s working class. We seek to gather feedback from union members and working people, develop a majoritarian agenda to address these issues, push this out into the world, help define the agenda and set the conversation for what we are prioritizing as a state, recruit candidates to run on it and organize and campaign to win pieces of the agenda. 
• Supports the Maine AFL-CIO’s overall political and electoral program. This includes developing and implementing political plans, engaging union members and allies in electoral programs, supporting our Labor Civics cohort and our growing union electoral canvass team and program, coordinating necessary training, developing campaign materials (scripts, message documents, educational materials, etc) and more. 
• Works with Maine AFL-CIO staff and affiliates to develop policy year round to improve the lives of working people and support affiliates. 
• Supports state legislative and federal work and engages deeply in the State Legislature to run strategic legislative campaigns.
• Works with Maine AFL-CIO staff and affiliates to develop worker/member driven education and field campaigns to support legislative, issue and political work. 
• Works to link policy development, legislative work and politics to union organizing, non- traditional worker organizing, contract campaigns and affiliate issue campaigns. 
• Works with Maine AFL-CIO staff, affiliates and leaders to build a volunteer and member driven people powered political and legislative program that seeks to increase participation and leadership of union members and allies.
• Works with staff and leaders to support candidate recruitment and supporting union members and progressive allies to run for elected office. Helps support Maine AFL-CIO’s annual Worker Candidate Training. 
• Works together with Maine AFL-CIO staff on aspects of organizational development, fundraising, organizational conventions, campaigns, projects, trainings and meetings and other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Skills

• Three - five years of legislative, political or organizing experience. 
• Experience developing and running strategic legislative, political or issue campaigns. 
• Knowledge of and experience with the labor movement, local unions, union leaders and union members. 
• Ideally union organizing or community organizing experience. Strong one on one relational organizing skills; ability to build trusting relationships. 
• Popular education experience running participatory educational programs or trainings; experience developing and refining training curriculums for working people. 
• Strong writing, research, communication and listening skills.
• Demonstrated ability to build teams and work effectively in a team environment in both a lead and a support role. 
• Commitment to building the labor movement and social, economic and racial justice. 
• Ability to work independently within the context of a plan. Effective time management skills, including prioritizing and managing multiple tasks, and demonstrated experience in developing personal work plans and goals. 
• Demonstrated capacity for strategic thinking and planning and ability to adjust strategies and tactics as the situation requires. 
• Computer proficiency is required: Database/spreadsheet, email, internet, word processing, social media platforms, etc.
• Ability to travel.

Supervision & Job Details
The Campaigns Director is based in our Legislative & Political Department. The Campaigns Director works under the direct supervision of the Maine AFL-CIO Executive Director and in close collaboration with the Maine AFL-CIO President, Legislative and Political Director and Maine AFL-CIO staff. 

This is a full time, union represented position based in our Augusta, Maine office. Hybrid work based in Maine is possible. Salary is commensurate with experience. Salary range: $56,000 – $74,000.
