Job Description

Hennepin County is hiring a Probation/Parole Officer for the traditional unit within the Adult Probation Supervision Services division of the Department of Community Corrections and Rehabilitation (DOCCR). This position is open to different levels of experience/qualifications. The candidate can be hired into a PO, Senior, or Career level depending on related experience. This Probation/Parole position is in the High Contact Supervision area and will supervise clients convicted of person, property, domestic and drug related offenses. The officer will work towards client behavioral change as well as public safety using a combination of risk and needs assessments, individualized case planning, responsivity supervision strategies and other evidence-based practices.

Salary based upon qualifications and duties: 

Probation/Parole Officer:  $62,483.57 - $93,725.36 Annually  
Probation/Parole Officer, Senior: $68,888.14 - $103,332.21 Annually
Probation/Parole Officer, Career: $75,949.18 - $113,923.76 Annually

Location and hours:

This position is hybrid and will be performed both on-site at the Government Center, 300 South 6th Street, Minneapolis, Minnesota 55415, the Probation Center North, 4336 Lyndale Ave North, Minneapolis, Minnesota 55412 or the South Hub at 2215 East Lake Street, Suite 470, Minneapolis, Minnesota 55407 and remote as job duties require. Work hours are generally between 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Wh ile this position is designated as hybrid, based on current requirements hires must reside in or relocate to Minnesota or Wisconsin.

In these positions, you will:
  • Work successfully across cultures and actively support equity while being respectful of lived experiences and demonstrate on-going expansion of one’s own awareness of culture 
  • Supervise high contact clients in accordance with supervision standards and case plans.
  • Maintain documentation of a wide variety of case activity, including, but not limited to contact with clients, victims concerned parties and treatment agencies within DOCCR's case management system and other department data systems. 
  • Utilize Evidence Based practices to promote behavioral change and public safety including, actuarial assessments, cognitive behavioral interventions, motivational interviewing, case planning, etc. 
  • Be responsive to urgent and emergent situations. 
  • Prepare court reports, attend and participate in court hearings. 
  • Conduct field and home visits. 
  • Communicate and collaborate with internal and external systems and community partners. 
  • Provide resources and refer clients to internal and external programming related to chemical use, abusive behaviors, mental health treatment to address specific client needs and risk. 
    • Individuals hired at the PO level  must demonstrate an ability to supervise a caseload with the least complex cases within the unit and build proficiency and competency with essential functions of the position through formal and informal training, and perform the duties listed above.
    • Individuals hired at the Senior PO level  must operate with limited oversight and demonstrate an ability to actively case manage more complex cases, independently developing/adjusting supervision and/or case plans and defending decisions independently in Court, and perform the duties listed above.
    • Individuals hired at the Career PO level must demonstrate an ability to operate independently with the most complex cases within the unit, are proficient with correctional Evidence Based Practices, and may stand in for a Corrections Unit Supervisor (CUS) to coach Senior- and PO-level peers on their work assignments requiring higher level functions.
Need to have:
  • For hire as Probation/Parole Officer,  one of the following :
    • Associate's degree in any field and four or more years of relevant full-time equivalent paid experience with clients served by the justice system or human services.
    • Bachelor's degree in non-related field and two or more years of relevant full-time equivalent approved, related paid or volunteer experience with clients served by in the justice system or human services.
    • Bachelor's degree in one of the below areas and one or more years of full-time equivalent paid or volunteer work experience with clients served by in the justice system or human services.
    • Master's degree or higher in sociology, social work, criminal justice, psychology, counseling, law enforcement, education, or a related field; including the completion of a supervised clinical field work training/internship (if required by degree program).
  • Note: The Evidence Based Practice Corrections Professional Certificate   may be substituted for one year of relevant experience.
  • For hire as Probation/Parole Officer, Senior,  one of the following:
    • Associate's degree in any field and six or more years full-time equivalent paid experience with clients served by the justice system or human services.
    • Bachelor's degree in non-related field and four or more years of relevant full-time equivalent paid or volunteer work experience with clients served by the justice system or human services.  
    • Bachelor's degree in one of the below areas and three or more years of relevant full-time equivalent paid or volunteer work experience with clients served by in the justice system or human services. 
    • Master's degree or higher in sociology, social work, criminal justice, psychology, counseling, law enforcement, education, or a related field; including completion of a supervised clinical field work training/internship (if required by degree program); and one or more years of relevant full-time equivalent paid or volunteer work experience with clients served by the justice system or human services.

    • The criminal justice system.
    • The principles of Evidence-Based Practices.
    • Adult Field Division policies and procedures. 
  • Ability to:
    • Complete LS-CMI assessments.
    • Implement CBI interventions, including Carey Guides and Bits. Create case plans. 
    • Use differing intervention strategies which facilitate offender change.
    • Work with a diverse population.
  • Experience:
    • Working as a probation or parole officer.
    • Conducting home and/or community visits with clients.
    • Working in collaboration with community agencies. 
    • Writing client case notes and creating court reports
  • Excellent communication skills and well organized, detail oriented, and comfortable with evolving technology.
