Posting Context Statement:

Recreation and Wellbeing at the University of Idaho provides programs, services, facilities and equipment to enrich the University learning experience. The department fosters a lifelong appreciation and involvement in recreation and well being activities for our students, faculty, staff and the community. Programs include Fitness, Intramural Sports, Outdoor Programs, Sports Clubs, Vandal Spirit Squad and Vandal Health Education.


Position Overview:

The Assistant Director, Climbing Center and Outdoor Programs oversees day-to-day leadership and administrative functions of the Climbing Center including hiring, training, scheduling and supervision of student employees. The Assistant Director manages the Climbing Center budget, employee payroll, and is responsible for researching, purchasing, and the maintenance/repair of the facility and equipment. The position will be responsible for designing, planning, scheduling, publicizing, coordinating, and instructing a variety of instructional trips, instructional programs, and classes within the Student Recreation Center Climbing Center and Outdoor Program. The position will manage the recruitment, hiring and training of student staff in preparation for their roles as trip staff. Other duties include assisting the Director in implementing risk management procedures and policies for student led programs used for Outdoor Program and Climbing Center activities. The Assistant Director will oversee the Outdoor Program Graduate Support Assistant. The position will assist the Outdoor and Youth Programs Director with other duties within the Outdoor Program such as leading a variety of wilderness and outdoor recreational and developmental activities for the university community. Other duties include directing safety inspections and maintenance of the Climbing Center and Climbing Center equipment.


Required Experience:

  • Three years in recreation and facility management and the recreation program development field
  • Supervising, training, hiring, and evaluating operations and/or recreation programming staff
  • Leading and instructing participants in wilderness recreation and educational activities
  • Teaching and leading the following competencies: backpacking, leave no trace, snow sports, glacier travel, avalanche safety, mountain biking, navigation, flatwater and whitewater kayaking, whitewater rafting and climbing
  • Evaluating and assessing program outcomes
  • Developing, recommending, and evaluating program and operation procedures and recommending change
  • Using computer software and applications for word processing and database management
  • Working in an indoor rock climbing facility
  • Demonstrating rock climbing on both natural and artificial terrain
  • Demonstrating trainings and developing staff in technical skill attainment, group leadership, risk management and site assessment


Required Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in recreation administration, sport management, exercise science, education, physical education, outdoor education, recreation education, education, adult leadership, natural resources, environmental science, tourism or business


Required Other:

  • Ability to achieve First Aid and CPR instructor status with American Heart Association within six months of hire
  • Ability to obtain Wilderness first Responder and CPR certification within six months of hire
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and the ability to meet university requirements for driving university-owned vehicles
  • Ability to work nonstandard business hours including occasional evenings, weekends and holidays


Additional Preferred:

  • Master’s degree in recreation administration, sport management, exercise science, higher education, physical education, outdoor education, recreation education, education, adult leadership, natural resources, environmental science, tourism or business
  • Experience and managing member services software like RecTrac
  • Certification in a variety of outdoor related disciplines from industry providers: Swiftwater Rescue Technician, ACA Whitewater Kayak or Raft, Avalanche Educator, Leave No Trace Master Educator and others
  • Certification in indoor or outdoor climbing site management or instruction via PCIA , AMGA , CWA or equivalent
  • Member of applicable professional organizations associated with the position which may include Association for Outdoor Recreation and Education, American Avalanche Association, American Mountain Guides Association, etc
  • Experience in outdoor related disciplines notated in a field log; including rock climbing, whitewater rafting, backcountry skiing, backpacking, and other activities
  • Experience teaching academic climbing or other outdoor recreation courses in a University setting
  • Experience in student development through fundamental principles, theories and model
  • Experience developing and managing budgets
  • Experience with adaptive or therapeutic recreation facility services to ensure effective and accessible membership experiences
  • Experience demonstrating administering risk management practices for recreation programs
